Cryptikon
Quilter: Angela Thie
Size: 78.75 x 82.75 inches (Wall Size)
Description: The name says it all. This quilt is a riddle and only individual observers will find the answer for themselves. This quilt is the first of a series of three, where I encouraged my husband to paint on fabric. I didn’t know what he would create. This was quite exciting, both in a good and in a scary way. We had both to agree that the final result would be a collaboration of two artists, remaining respectful of one another, but still pushing each other out of our comfort zones. This quilt was on display at the 7th Quilt Nihon Exhibition in Tokyo in February 2003. The exhibition toured Japan later. My aim was to create a wall hanging that had its roots in old medieval times - heavy, huge and a bit daunting. For the batting I used tense cotton which gives the quilt weight. To make it even more challenging, I used sliver metallic thread and free motion quilting. It was a great exercise for my patience! Please note that the quilt is located in New Zealand.
Technique: Machine Piecing. Freehand Machine Quilting. Please note that when I machine quilt, I secure the start and end of a quilting line with the machine as well, so there might be visible double lines. Hanging sleeves are part of the design. No binding, “pillow cased” instead. Made in 2002.
Fabrics: Top: Hand-Painted Cotton, Cotton, Taffeta, Plastic Foil, Organza, Tulle Backing: Hand-Dyed Damask, Suede in the Hanging Sleeves
Batting: Very Heavy Cotton
Care: Only with love and maybe a bit of dusting. The paint is set on the painting, but I still wouldn’t dare to wash the quilt.
Price: $ 3000.00 US + Shipping & Insurance (to anywhere in the world from New Zealand)

Synergie

Synergie
Quilter: Angela Thie
Size: 78.75 x 90.5 inches (Wall Size)
Description: Synergie or Synergy, meaning two or more things functioning together to produce a result not independently obtainable (ref: Wikipedia). This quilt is the second of a series of three, where I encouraged my husband to paint on fabric. I didn’t know what he would create. This was quite exciting, both in a good and in a scary way. We had both to agree that the final result would be a collaboration of two artists, remaining respectful of one another, but still pushing each other out of our comfort zones. Synergie toured the U.S. as part of the World Quilt show in 2004. Using the analogy of a partnership, where two people meet and get together, all nicely framed. But wait, there is more! Suddenly the potential unleashes and the frame is too small. Unknown horizons are waiting with all the little distractions. The sky is the limit. The pieces of the bursting frame are placed on organza as I couldn’t give the quilt a definite edge. Note that the quilt is located in New Zealand.
Technique: Machine Pieced. Machine Quilted. Please note that if I machine quilt, I secure the start and end of a quilting line with the machine as well, so there might be visible double lines. Hanging sleeve included. No binding as such, the organza is the binding. Made in 2003.
Fabrics: Hand-Painted Cotton, Cotton, Cling Wrap, Aluminum Foil, Organza, Leather, Fur.
Batting: Polyester Fleece
Care: Only with love and maybe a bit of dusting. The paint is set on the painting, but I still wouldn’t dare to wash the quilt.
Price: $ 3000.00 US + Shipping & Insurance (to anywhere in the world from New Zealand)
